The custom designed & built authentic log home offers many appealing & dramatic features. Enjoying panoramic ocean & islands viewscapes, it is a true “natural” retreat.
The property is a totally private 2.71 acres, & offers a coastal forest preserve at your doorstep (large, private park reserve is your neighbour — watch the deer and the eagles. Whales and seals go by at oceanside!).
Property enjoys shared access to year round docks, tennis, miles of walking trails, & private beaches. Maracaibo is like ownership in a private park — see Li for the details, here! One owns one’s private property, freehold, and there is a companies act aspect to the shared ownership — the best of both worlds! Created by Bob Hassell, a noted Salt Spring architect of the coastal design ethic, this wonderful bare land strata development captures the best features of the Islands Trust’s “preserve & protect” mandate, and actually predates the Trust.
Located close to all amenities, yet like living in your own private park – the best !
Vendors comments:
This is an handcrafted – not milled – cedar log home made of dry Okanogan cedar logs grown in the extremely dry area of the Caribou area of B.C. These trees grow slowly to become extremely strong with little water content. After construction this type of log experiences dramatically less shrinkage than other types of logs [only 1/4" for every 9 vertical feet], and the logs in. This home consequently show little checking [cracking]. While the largest logs are 20″ in diameter, the average diameter is 13″ito14″, Cedar is the most expensive of the 4 types of logs used for log home construction [pine, spruce, Douglas fir, western red cedar], and is known for its resistance to both disease and parasites and for its longevity. The method of construction was Scandinavian Cope which uses no mortar [chinking] between logs. Any exterior trim or siding is of custom milled yellow cedar.
It is very unique that the interior finishing of this home is the actual wood logs. There is no planking, and gyprock is found only in small amounts in the garage and lower level work room. Stairs and railings are of Douglas fir. Partitions and closets are of clear cut spruce, block paneling is of red oak, and lower level finishing is of pine. There are 30 solid core Douglas fir doors. The main entry door is of Ash. Sun Room door to sun deck is commercial aluminium, and the lowest level exit door is ha1f cedar and half pine. Floors are a combination of glazed tile [in Entrance, Dining Area, Kitchen and entry level hall], wall to wall carpeting, and tile in bathrooms.
The 2 main bathrooms are fitted with custom marble showers and vanities. There is a custom marble tub in Master ensuite and the extra large marble shower in Master ensuite has built in seating bench The Kitchen has granite countertops, Oak custom cupboards, triple sink, wall oven, countertop range, dishwasher, and built in microwave. Bedrooms are fitted with extra deep double cupboards with wide swing-open doors.
Many of the entry level ceilings are vaulted – the Living Room ceiling soars to 21′. Skylights are found throughout – 6 in the Living Room, 1 in the Foyer, 1 and 1 in the Master Bedroom. Ceiling fans are placed throughout the home. The Airtight wood stove in the Living Room is a great supplement to home comfort within the thermal mass of the large logs. Electric heating costs are surprisingly low for an home of this size.
The Living Room and Sun Room on the main level of the home are 4′ below the remainder of that level. These sunken rooms are reached by wide open Douglas fir stairs. The dining area peninsula dramatically extends out into the Living Room area. There is a wired in alarm system.
